— Why he’s one of the greats
Name one hidden habit, define it, answer the objection, and give a practice for this week.
The podcast and YouTube era of Catholic catechesis. Fr. Mike Schmitz was ordained for the Diocese of Duluth in 2003 and serves as chaplain of the Newman Catholic Campus Ministry at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where his Sunday homilies are filmed and posted every week. Since 2015 he has hosted Ascension Presents on YouTube, and since 2021 the daily Bible in a Year podcast. His secret: he preaches like a man talking with one student across a table. Every homily names one hidden habit or one missing habit of the heart, gives it a sticky label (“blind spots,” “eternal perspective”), defines it with a word study or a borrowed definition, answers the objection a listener is already forming, and ends with a short practice to try this week. He stacks voices freely: a saint, a C.S. Lewis line, a study, a TikTok lawyer, a story from his own campus. He tells all of it in plain, self-mocking speech that never sounds like a lecture.

What makes his style unique
“Each homily ran for somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes, but the priest managed to hold my attention the entire time.”
