— Why he’s one of the greats
Diagnose the problem, then coin the line that turns it.
The post-Christian global city. Jon Tyson grew up in Adelaide, Australia, started working in a butcher shop at 14, came to faith through a Pentecostal youth group, and moved to the United States on a Bible college scholarship. At 28 he started a church in his Manhattan apartment, and in January 2025 he marked his 20th year of pastoring in New York, where he now leads Church of the City New York. His secret: he argues in two halves. First he diagnoses the problem with evidence (trust surveys, research on rejection, Becker on the denial of death) and a numbered list of symptoms tied to Bible scenes. Then he turns, somewhere between a quarter and just past half of the sermon, to the remedy, and he coins one line for that turn that he keeps repeating: “God comes where he’s wanted,” “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” His own stories serve as proof, especially ones where he looks foolish (the butcher shop, the trapeze school in Brooklyn, his daughter hiding behind a door). He ends by asking people to do something with their bodies.
