— Why he’s one of the greats
Disarm, open a wound, chain the Scriptures, and never assume the gospel.
In 2002 Chandler took over Highland Village First Baptist Church, about 160 people, which became The Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas. He survived brain cancer in 2009-10 and led the Acts 29 church-planting network from 2012. His secret: he disarms the room with humor, then opens a real wound of his own. He reads the text and chains cross-references to show its theme across the whole Bible. He makes the cross explicit by the midpoint (“Do not, please, do not assume the gospel”) and widens to God’s glory before coming back to diagnose the hearer. He preaches about 50 minutes from a skeleton outline, not a manuscript.
- 160People when he took over in 2002
- 10,000Passed by 2012, now reported at more than 14,000
- 250KSermon downloads a month by 2010
What makes his style unique
