— Why he’s one of the greats
Reduce the sermon to one sentence, prove it, then apply it longest.
About 1,200 of his sermons survive in small handmade manuscript booklets. His secret: he reduced the whole sermon to one sentence (the “Doctrine”), proved it with numbered reasons that closed every escape route, then spent the longest section applying it to specific groups. He wanted truth felt, not just agreed with.

- 300Young people who joined the church in six months (1734-35)
- 1741Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, preached at Enfield
What makes his style unique
The pattern in every sermonText (short) → Doctrine (one sentence) → Proof, in three moves → Application
“He made but little motion of his head or hands in the desk, but spake as to discover the motion of his own heart.”
