— Why he’s one of the greats
Plain truth for plain people, and an offer of Christ to expect now.
Wesley preached an estimated 40,000-45,000 sermons, many outdoors and many at 5 a.m. He began field preaching on April 2, 1739, when he “submitted to be more vile,” and said “I look upon all the world as my parish.” His brother Charles also preached, but his legacy is about 6,000 hymns; John’s sermons became Methodism’s doctrinal standards. His secret: “plain truth for plain people.” One plain text, a life-or-death question, and two to four numbered heads, often the text’s own words or What, How, Why. He defined by negation first (“not barely… a cold, lifeless assent”), then gave a one-sentence definition. He answered objections head-on and turned to “thou” for a direct offer of Christ: “expect it now.”
