— Why he’s one of the greats
Open the text, draw one doctrine, split it into memorable heads, and apply as you go.
English Nonconformity in the generation after the Puritans. Matthew Henry was born at Broad Oak on the Flintshire-Shropshire border, trained by his father Philip Henry and at Thomas Doolittle’s academy, and studied law at Gray’s Inn before turning to the ministry. He pastored a Presbyterian congregation in Chester from 1687 to 1712, then Mare Street, Hackney, until his death in 1714. His secret: he opened the text first and found the sermon inside it. He read the passage as a scene, glossed its words, drew one plain doctrine, and split it into heads that hearers could carry home, often in a pair (hope and fear), a controlling image (sin as a debt) or a run of alliteration (“Power, Providence, Pity, Promise”). Every head was proved by Scripture laid against Scripture, then pressed with “Let us…” and aimed at named groups in the room: the young, parents, the rich, ministers, mourners. It is the same voice that fills his Commentary.
- 25years pastoring in Chester (1687-1712)
- 350+members in his Chester congregation
- 13ministers finished his Exposition
What makes his style unique
“He seemingly exhausts the subject without exhausting the reader.”
