— Why he’s one of the greats
Wound, then woo: a plain frame filled with fire.
Whitefield preached 18,000+ times, often outdoors, without notes. Ben Franklin calculated that he “might well be heard by more than thirty thousand.” Fewer than about 90 sermons survive. His secret: a plain Puritan frame filled with fire. He corrected an error in the introduction and announced three heads, each packed with numbered sub-points. He stripped false hopes and examined the conscience at every head, then turned around 80% to address each group in the crowd by name. In evangelistic sermons he ended with a doubled, tearful “Come, come…”

- 30,000Hearers Franklin calculated could hear him at once

What makes his style unique
“My hearing him preach gave me a heart wound.”
