— Why he’s one of the greats
Argue the case like a lawyer, answer every objection, and ask for a verdict tonight.
Charles Finney was a trained lawyer who turned to preaching after his conversion in 1821 and carried courtroom habits into the pulpit. He preached without a manuscript, spoke to his hearers as “you,” and argued for a verdict the way he once argued before a jury. His secret: he treated the sermon as a case to be won that night. He defined the text’s key word, cleared away what it does not mean, and then built a chain of argument with illustrations from courts, governments and daily work. He named the listener’s objections before the listener could, answered each one, and then demanded a decision on the spot. The anxious seat gave that decision a place to happen.

What makes his style unique
“It did not sound like preaching, but like a lawyer arguing a case before a court and jury.”
