— Why he’s one of the greats
Tell the story, walk the text plainly, confess your failures, then do the stuff.
The charismatic renewal reaches mainstream evangelicals. John Wimber was a professional musician who came to Christ at 29, became a church growth consultant at Fuller, and in 1977 began leading a home prayer meeting that became the Vineyard Christian Fellowship of Anaheim. From there he led the Vineyard movement and trained pastors on several continents in what he called “doin’ the stuff.” His secret: he taught like a man explaining something at the kitchen table, then did it in front of you. He opens with a story, names a theme and a plain framework, reads long stretches of the Bible aloud, and comments on them in everyday words, with jokes at his own expense and frank stories of failure. Then he stops talking about it and invites the Holy Spirit to come, so the room ends by practicing what it just heard. His calm, unhurried delivery made the supernatural feel normal rather than staged.

What makes his style unique
“He raised the level of expectation of divine action in the life of the church.”
