— Why he’s one of the greats
Write the application first, then build the whole sermon to reach it.
A Texas-born former Marine who pastored through the rise of evangelical radio and the megachurch: First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton (1971-94), Insight for Living from 1979, Stonebriar Community Church from 1998. His secret: He builds the sermon backward from the application: he writes the applications first, then shapes the title, introduction and body to reach them. His rule is 25-50-25: a quarter of the time for rapport, half for the body, a quarter for application and close. In between, a run of personal and biographical stories carries the meaning, so the exposition sounds like conversation and always lands on “now what?”
