— Why he’s one of the greats
Explain before you exhort, until Spirit-filled practice feels reasonable.
Jack Hayford took a tiny Foursquare congregation in Van Nuys, California, in 1969 and pastored it for 30 years as it became The Church On The Way. He wrote “Majesty,” led the Foursquare Church as president, and became a trusted voice for Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal pastors alike. His secret: he explained before he exhorted. Christianity Today described him as “aggressive about his beliefs” but presenting them “graciously, in a way that explains and persuades.” He took Spirit-filled practices that made people nervous, such as raising hands, praying for the sick and forceful intercession, and walked the room through why each one was biblical until it felt reasonable. He read Scripture on his knees asking “What does this have to do with me?”, and his sermons carry that same personal edge, usually ending in a response people act on in the room.
- 25Regular attenders when he arrived in 1969
- 10,000Weekly attendance by the end of the 1980s
- 600Hymns and choruses, including “Majesty”
What makes his style unique
“I think pastors sense in him what they are longing to be.”
