— Why he’s one of the greats
Let the text set the agenda every week, verse by verse, for a lifetime.
John MacArthur became pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, on February 9, 1969, at age 29, and served there until his death on July 14, 2025. Through the Grace to You broadcast, The Master’s Seminary and his books, he became the best-known verse-by-verse preacher of his generation. His secret: he let the text set the agenda, every week, for 56 years. He took one passage, explained what it meant in its context, ran it through the rest of Scripture with dozens of cross-references, and pressed its meaning on the listener’s conscience. He used few jokes and few personal stories; his outlines were loose because the passage, not a clever structure, carried the sermon. His authority came from the sense that the listener was hearing the Bible itself explained, not the preacher’s opinions about it.
