— Why he’s one of the greats
Read it together, make it plain, then name their troubles until the room rises.
The broadcast era of the Black Pentecostal pulpit. Gilbert Earl Patterson was born in Humboldt, Tennessee, grew up in Memphis and Detroit, and was ordained an elder in the Church of God in Christ as a teenager. He founded Temple of Deliverance in Memphis in 1975 and preached there until his death, while his Bountiful Blessings broadcast carried his voice across the country every Sunday. His secret: he preached like a teacher who could sing. He has the whole room read the text aloud, boils it to one sentence people say to each other, and then makes it plain with homely pictures: a billboard you read at highway speed, his mother’s sewing-machine belt, a palm tree that moves to Chicago. He keeps announcing that he is closing, keeps going, and lands on a late litany that names the hearers’ troubles one by one until the room is on its feet.

What makes his style unique
“He had this humongous voice - a big, meaty, bright, wide, vocal range.”
