— Why he’s one of the greats
Pull one detail from the text, turn it into a picture, then call for action now.
The age of the African mass crusade. Reinhard Bonnke was born in Königsberg, East Prussia, went to Africa as a missionary in 1967, and founded Christ for all Nations (CfaN) in 1974. In later years he lived in Florida and preached to American, European and Australian audiences. His secret: he had, by his own account, “only one sermon,” and he preached it as pictures. Every doctrine becomes something you can hold: soap that only works when you apply it, a spacesuit, power steering, an electric cable lying in the street. He takes one detail of a text (“one sat upon each of them,” “carry up my bones”), says the Holy Spirit showed him something he had never heard preached, and builds the message around it. Then he proves it with a long story from an African crusade, usually told in the last third, and ends by asking the room to do something right away.
