— Why he’s one of the greats
Clear the misreading, set the context, walk the text’s own shape to Christ, then pray.
The scholar-preacher of the evangelical renewal. Don Carson was born in Montreal, grew up in French Canada, pastored a church in Vancouver, and earned a Cambridge PhD in New Testament before joining Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1978. For decades he taught at Trinity during the week and preached at conferences, churches and campuses around the world. His secret: he preaches the passage the way a careful reader would teach it, and he never stops talking to the room. He first clears away the misreading people bring with them, then backs up into the book and the Old Testament until the passage stands in its real setting. Then he walks it clause by clause, with a small word (“but,” “and,” “broad”) turning the whole reading. Every few minutes he asks what you expected the text to say and shows you what it actually says. The scholarship is everywhere, but it is spoken plainly, with dry humor, and it always arrives at Christ and a call to believe.
