How John MacArthur Preached: Let the Text Set the Agenda Every Week
John MacArthur preached at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, for 56 years and became the best-known verse-by-verse preacher of his generation. We studied seven of his sermons, from his first Sunday at Grace in 1969 to a pastors’ conference in 2024. The shape barely moves: one passage explained in order, run through the rest of Scripture, and pressed on the listener’s conscience.
Who John MacArthur was
MacArthur became pastor of Grace Community Church on February 9, 1969, at age 29, and served there until his death on July 14, 2025. He preached through the entire New Testament, verse by verse, finishing on June 5, 2011, a journey of 42 years.
Grace to You began airing his sermons beyond Southern California in 1977, and its English broadcast now airs more than 1,000 times a day, with about 3,000 sermons free online. The MacArthur New Testament Commentary (34 volumes, built from his sermon notes) has sold more than 2.8 million copies and The MacArthur Study Bible more than 4 million. He founded The Master’s Seminary in 1986 to train expository preachers.
The shape of a MacArthur sermon
Every sermon we studied takes one passage and explains it in the order of the text. On his first Sunday at Grace, in “How to Play Church,” he read the text with no warm-up jokes or stories and went straight to explaining it.
His main points usually come from the passage’s own words, characters or questions. His outlines were loose, because the passage, not a clever structure, carried the sermon. Sometimes he opened with a problem in the church or in the hearer, and sometimes he set out the cultural background first.
Then he ran the text through the rest of Scripture with heavy cross-referencing. He used few jokes and few personal stories. His authority came from the sense that the listener was hearing the Bible itself explained, not the preacher’s opinions about it.
The sermon most often landed on doctrinal assurance or warning, and sometimes on a direct charge to the listener or to pastors.
What made his preaching different
The text sets the agenda
One passage, explained in its context. The text chose the subject, every week, for 56 years.
Scripture with Scripture
Dozens of cross-references run through each sermon, so Scripture explains Scripture.
Pressed on the conscience
Few jokes, few stories, the Bible explained, and then its meaning pressed on the listener’s conscience.
What others said
“He could get more out of a Bible verse than anyone I’ve ever known.”
— Franklin Graham
“He was a preacher God used to make other preachers better preachers.”
— R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2025
What to take into your own pulpit
Let the passage choose the subject
MacArthur didn’t pick a topic and look for a text. Preaching through books lets Scripture set what the church hears.
Use the Bible to explain the Bible
Cross-references show people that a passage isn’t standing alone. The rest of Scripture backs it up.
Trust the text to hold attention
He used few stories and few jokes. When the explanation is clear, the passage itself can carry the room.
Those are the ideas. The guide turns them into ten steps you can follow this week, plus the sermons we studied and a fill-in outline in his shape.
