— Why he’s one of the greats
Clear the bad picture, state each head as a sentence, prove it, then summon to action.
The postwar evangelical recovery of Reformed and Puritan theology, carried from Britain to North America. James Innell Packer was converted as an Oxford student, ordained in the Church of England in 1952, taught in English colleges, and moved to Regent College in Vancouver in 1979, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He called himself an “adult catechist,” and his pulpit and lectern sound alike: a teacher explaining doctrine so that it lands on the heart. His secret: he preached doctrine as a working truth. He names a truth people find dull or misuse, clears away the bad picture, then announces his heads in advance and states each one as a full sentence you could write down. He proves each head with a chain of Scripture and a voice from the past (McCheyne, Edwards, Finney, Toplady), lights it with one plain picture like a floodlight or a stagnant pond, and ends by urging the room to act.
