— Why he’s one of the greats
Double listening: hear the text and the world, and build a bridge between them.
John Stott served All Souls Church, Langham Place, in central London for his whole parish ministry, first as curate and then as rector, and from that pulpit he became a Bible teacher to students, pastors and churches on every continent. His secret: he practiced what he called “double listening,” hearing the ancient text and the modern world at the same time, and he built a bridge between the two in every sermon. He let the passage set the outline, numbered his points so a listener could follow them without notes, and held pairs of truths in balance rather than pushing one to an extreme. His delivery was calm and deliberate, giving people room to think. He always moved from light to heat: clear explanation first, then a direct call to respond.
