— Why he’s one of the greats
Turn rhetoric into worship, and land every truth on “now you take part.”
Fourth-century Cappadocia and Constantinople. The empire had turned Christian, but the capital’s churches were held by Arians, and the Nicene faith survived in one small chapel Gregory called the Anastasia (“Resurrection”). Trained in rhetoric at Athens alongside Basil, he was briefly bishop of Constantinople (380-381). His secret: He turned classical rhetoric into worship. He names what the occasion means, climbs from God to creation, the Fall and the Incarnation, and lands on “now you take part.” He puts the hearer inside the story (“with Christ…”), packs doctrine into short antitheses people remember (“the Uncreate is created”), and closes in doxology every time.

- 380-381His brief years as bishop of Constantinople
- “The Theologian”The title the Orthodox Church still gives him
