— Why he’s one of the greats
Preach the passage read: plain story first, then the soul, then Christ.
Origen was born in Alexandria around 185, became a teacher of new believers there at eighteen, and spent his last two decades in Caesarea on the coast of Palestine, where he preached to the church week after week. His homilies are some of the oldest Christian sermons we still have, taken down by stenographers as he spoke. His secret: he preached the passage the reader had just read, phrase by phrase, and he would not let a verse go until it had spoken on three levels. First the plain story (“believe that it happened truly”), then what it says to your soul today, then how it shows Christ. He asked hard questions of the text out loud, stopped in the middle of the sermon to pray for light, and kept turning to the room with “you.”

What makes his style unique
