— Why he’s one of the greats
Preach the day’s Scripture, walk people through what they lived, and land on Christ.
The Latin church of the late fourth century. Ambrose was a trained Roman lawyer and the governor of the province around Milan when the people acclaimed him bishop in 374, while he was still a catechumen. He preached in Milan’s basilicas for 23 years, and most of what survives from him began as sermons. His secret: he preached what the people had just read, sung or lived. He took the day’s lessons as his spine, walked the newly baptized through the rites they had just passed through, and set an Old Testament picture beside Christ at every step. He spoke to the room in the second person, opened points with short questions, and in his funeral sermons he even turned and spoke to the dead. Augustine came to hear a famous speaker and stayed for the Scripture.
