— Why he’s one of the greats
Make the title the whole sermon, connect before you correct, and keep it simple.
Rich Wilkerson Jr. grew up in the Miami pulpit of his father, Rich Wilkerson Sr., at Trinity Church, and led its young-adult gathering, The Rendezvous, from 2007 until it became VOUS Church in 2015. He preaches to a city full of people who did not grow up in church, and he talks to them like friends at a dinner table. His secret: the sermon title is the whole sermon in one sentence (“God keeps receipts,” “With God there’s always a way”). He opens with a self-deprecating family story, walks one Gospel scene, and stacks short, quotable lines that people can screenshot and repeat. His rule is grace before truth: “Let’s connect before we correct.” He describes the job plainly: “I’m always trying to take the complex and make it really, really simple.”

What makes his style unique
“If you’ve looked at Rich Wilkerson, certainly he has a gift for communicating.”
