— Why he’s one of the greats
Hold the church to the New Testament, call it to die to self, and end in prayer.
The holiness revival pulpit of the twentieth century. Leonard Ravenhill trained at Cliff College under Samuel Chadwick, preached to large wartime crowds in Britain, and spent his later decades in the United States calling the church to prayer and revival. His secret: he preached to the conscience of the church, not to the curiosity of the crowd. He opened the text with a piece of ancient background, then held the hearer against the New Testament and against the saints of revival history, from Wesley and Brainerd to Booth and Amy Carmichael. Dry wit and self-mockery kept the room breathing between hard blows. Nearly every message ended on the same ground: die to self, get alone with God, and pray.

What makes his style unique
“He lived as one who dwelt in the shadow of the Almighty and he preached as one sent from God.”
