— Why he’s one of the greats
Confess first, then hand people short, parallel commands and one action for this week.
The young-adult and digital discipleship era. Jonathan “JP” Pokluda led The Porch, the young-adult ministry of Watermark Community Church in Dallas, before he moved to Waco to lead Harris Creek Baptist Church. He preaches to a college town, answers questions on Instagram every week, and co-hosts the Becoming Something podcast. His secret: he preaches like a coach running a practice. Each message opens with a funny family story that turns into the sermon’s question (“but how do you know?”), states the big idea before he reads the text, and then walks through three to seven parallel points that are short commands the room can repeat (“I can’t. God can. I trust him.”). He confesses his own weakness at almost every turn, gives people a script or a habit to try that week, and ends with a specific action, not a general challenge. A Baylor student newspaper noted that he “often preaches that ‘clarity is kindness.’”
