The megachurch and conference era, and the move back to small and simple church. Francis Chan was born in San Francisco in 1967, planted Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California, in 1994, and later moved to San Francisco to start We Are Church, a network of house churches. Since then he has preached mostly as a guest at churches, campuses and pastors’ gatherings, through Crazy Love Ministries. His secret: he preaches against the pull of the platform he is standing on. He opens by praying against his own pride or by confessing his fear of the stage, then reads one passage and paraphrases it in blunt, everyday voice (“What are you, brain dead?”). Soon he turns the text on the people in the seats rather than the people outside. He proves each move with his own life: a teenage conversion, a father who did not want him, a selling of the family house. He will not end with a summary. He ends by praying over the room, because he keeps saying a sermon cannot change a heart and only the Spirit can.
