— Why he’s one of the greats
Retire the familiar misreading, hand over a tool, and draw your points from the verse.
The Reformed resurgence among Baptists. Voddie Baucham grew up in South Central Los Angeles, did not hear the gospel until university, and became a conference preacher in Texas, a church planter near Houston, and then a theological dean in Zambia. He died in Dallas on September 25, 2025, at 56. His secret: he preaches like a lawyer reopening a closed case. He names the reading everyone already holds (“I do not think it means what you think it means”), rebuilds the context with a tool the room can use again (the letter’s setting, the book’s structure, a word counted across the New Testament), then draws numbered points from the verse’s own words. Each point gets a homely picture and a short line he repeats until the room owns it. He slows down at the big words (“And you were dead. I just like to pause there”) and lands on Christ and prayer.
