— Why he’s one of the greats
Hook the room, walk the verses with plain handles, then land on what Christ has done.
The Sunbelt megachurch and the multisite church. Born in Laurel, Mississippi, Edwin Young left an engineering major at the University of Alabama to preach, pastored in the Carolinas, and came to Second Baptist Church Houston in 1978. He led it for 46 years and carried his teaching worldwide through The Winning Walk broadcast. His secret: he teaches the Bible like a beloved schoolteacher who also reads the morning paper. He opens with a fact, a poll or a headline, then has the room open their Bibles and walks the verses one by one, giving each section a plain handle (“three ifs,” “three seasons,” “two tests”). He makes old words vivid with Hebrew names and ancient customs, retells Bible stories with dry, self-deprecating humor, and spends real time on what the text means for public life. Late in the hour he lands on grace: what Christ has done, then a story or a hymn from his mother’s kitchen.
- 46Years leading Second Baptist Houston
- 18,000Weekly attendance in 2024, up from about 400
- 2Terms as SBC president (elected 1992, 1993)
What makes his style unique
“They have never gotten away from preaching the word of God. … And I think that is the secret.”
