How Greg Laurie Preaches: Start With the Listener, End With a Decision

Greg Laurie has spent five decades preaching the gospel to people who would never walk into a church. We studied eight of his sermons, from a 2006 crusade message to a 2025 podcast sermon. Under every one sits the same shape: name what the crowd already feels, open one Bible story to answer it, and call for one clear decision tonight.

Who Greg Laurie is

Laurie was born in Long Beach, California, in 1952 and came to faith on a Southern California high school campus in 1970. In 1973, at age 20, he started a home Bible study of about 30 people in Riverside under Chuck Smith’s mentorship. That study became Harvest Christian Fellowship, now Harvest Church, with campuses in California and Hawaii.

He founded Harvest Crusades in 1990, and by 2026 they had drawn more than 6.5 million people in person, with more than 600,000 recorded professions of faith. His daily program A New Beginning airs on more than 1,100 stations, he has written more than 70 books, he has served on the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association board, and his story became the 2023 film Jesus Revolution.

The shape of a Laurie sermon

Laurie starts with the listener, not the lecture. Most sermons open on a need, a fear or a question. “I know a few things about you,” he says, and then he names it: empty, lonely, guilty, afraid of death. His titles are often a question or a plain promise, like What Happens One Minute After You Die?

Then he opens one Bible story or character to answer it: the prodigal son, the man in the tombs, Peter’s denial. He keeps the points clear and the words plain enough for a first-time hearer.

He says the hard objections out loud, including wrong ideas about God, like the belief that God is always angry or wants to ruin your life. He uses his own testimony as evidence, telling how he came out of the party scene.

Every message ends with a call to decide now. In his crusade messages that call usually follows a short gospel summary: sin, the cross, the resurrection and repentance.

What made his preaching different

Start with the listener

Name what the crowd already feels. The sermon starts where the listener is, not where the outline is.

One Bible character

A single Bible story is opened to answer that need. One character carries the message from start to finish.

Decide tonight

Plain words, one clear decision. The vocabulary stays simple so nothing gets in the way of the call.

What others said

“They have written him up to be the evangelist of the future and he is.”

— Billy Graham

“I’m a big fan of Greg Laurie and the Harvest Crusade because the Good News is proclaimed in a way that’s engaging…”

— Kenton Beshore, senior pastor, Mariners Church

What to take into your own pulpit

Name the feeling first

Laurie earns a hearing by saying what people already feel before he opens the text.

Let one story carry it

A single Bible character is easier to follow and remember than a survey of passages.

Ask for something tonight

Every sermon drives toward one clear decision. Know what you are asking people to do before you start.

Those are the ideas. The guide turns them into ten steps you can follow this week, plus the sermons we studied and a fill-in outline in his shape.
