— Why he’s one of the greats
Walk the text phrase by phrase and make every phrase a window on Christ’s loveliness.
Samuel Rutherford was born around 1600 at Nisbet in the Borders, took his MA at Edinburgh in 1621, and in 1627 became minister of Anwoth, a scattered rural parish by the Solway in Galloway. He later taught divinity at St Andrews and sat as a Scottish commissioner at the Westminster Assembly in London. His secret: he preached the loveliness of Christ in the language of the farm, the market and the marriage bed. He walked a text phrase by phrase, drew a plain doctrine from nearly every word, and pressed each one home with “ye” and “O!” But the doctrine always served a person: Christ the Bridegroom, the Host who “bears all the expense,” the King on the white horse. His images came from Galloway life (horses that stumble, burgess tickets, bairns at a locked door, a flagon of wine), and his hearers wrote them down because they could not forget them.

What makes his style unique
“One of the most moving and affectionate preachers in his time, or perhaps in any age of the Church.”
