— Why he’s one of the greats
Put the listener inside the story, give a point of contact, and call for a decision.
Roberts came out of the Pentecostal Holiness church in Oklahoma, began a healing ministry in Enid in 1947, and took it on the road under a canvas “tent cathedral.” By the mid-1950s he was filming those tent meetings for national television. His secret: every sermon was a runway to a moment of decision. He took a Bible scene, put the listener inside it (“your furnace,” “your point of need”), handed them a simple act of faith to perform, a “point of contact,” and then called them forward for salvation and prayer. His message was relentlessly hopeful: “God is a good God,” “Expect a miracle,” “Something good is going to happen to you.” And he refused to step into the pulpit until he had prayed and sensed the anointing.

What makes his style unique
“Oral shook the landscape with the inescapable reality and practicality of Jesus’ whole ministry.”
