— Why he’s one of the greats
Logic on fire: truth to the mind, moving the heart, issuing in the will.
A former physician, “the Doctor” pastored Westminster Chapel from 1939 to 1968, and most of his sermons are free from the MLJ Trust. He preached three times a week: Friday nights: teaching. Romans ran to 366 sermons. Sunday mornings: building up believers. Ephesians ran to 233 sermons. Sunday evenings: evangelism. His secret: “Logic on fire.” He always started from the text, never from the subject, and drew the people’s condition out of it. He cleared away wrong views and wrong cures before giving the right one, and hung everything on one word (“But,” “wrath,” “by nature”). He raised his points one at a time as the argument required, answered objections as they came up, and applied all the way through. His ordering rule: truth goes to the mind, moves the heart, and issues in the will. “The heart is never to be approached directly.”
