— Why he’s one of the greats
Tell the history, then its use, and hand Christ to the hearer “for you.”
Luther preached about 4,000 times, sometimes four times in one day. About 2,300 sermons survive, through shorthand note-takers like Georg Rörer and his edited postils (model sermons for other preachers). His secret: “the history, then its use.” He told the story plainly, cleared away the false readings, and handed Christ to the hearer with “for you.” Then he moved faith outward into love for the neighbor. Law and polemic size to the text, and he doesn’t land the plane; he stops: “This is sufficient on today’s text.”

- 2,300Sermons that survive through note-takers and postils
- 8Invocavit sermons that calmed Wittenberg in 1522
What makes his style unique
“To preach plain and simply is a great art.”
