— Why he’s one of the greats
Say what the text means, then what it means on Monday, in plain repeatable lines.
Larry Osborne led North Coast Church in Vista, California, through its growth from a small congregation into a church of many campuses and venues, and he became a pastor other pastors call for counsel. He is known for pioneering sermon-based small groups, pastoral teaching teams, video venues and multisite churches. His secret: he preaches two sermons in one. In his own words, he asks “what does a passage say” and then “what’s it mean on Monday?”, and he marks the switch out loud by pulling the room into an imaginary coffee shop. He spends much of his time correcting the version of a text people grew up with: Daniel is not a Sunday school adventure story, and the “first love” church in Revelation 2 is not about lost passion. He gives every point a short line you can repeat, then makes it easy to remember with a deadpan joke about himself.

What makes his style unique
“Whenever I have the privilege of teaching God’s word, I like to essentially do two sermons.”
