— Why he’s one of the greats
Lay the foundation, raise the walls, and make the roof the longest part.
Gregory was a monk who became pope in 590. He preached 40 Gospel homilies in Rome’s basilicas (590-593) and 22 homilies on Ezekiel during the Lombard siege of the city. His Pastoral Rule became the church’s handbook for pastors for a thousand years. His secret: a three-storey reading of the text. He lays the literal foundation, raises the spiritual walls, and puts on a moral roof that is the longest part. Then he tells a true, recent, local story and closes with a plea and praise. He shaped the same truth differently for different kinds of hearers: “out of one doctrine, but not with one and the same exhortation.”

What makes his style unique
“Whatsoever he taught in word, that he fulfilled in deed.”
