— Why he’s one of the greats
Make every big idea short, memorable and easy to say back.
He came of age in the 1990s seeker-church boom and built one of America’s largest churches, Fellowship Church in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs, preaching in series with stage sets and making TV and online content before most pastors did. His secret: He makes every big idea short and easy to say back. He uses triads that start with the same letter, rhyming point names and two-line sayings that mirror each other, all hung on one prop or metaphor that runs the whole message. He writes the manuscript word for word, rehearses the transitions word for word, and changes the format often enough that no one can predict it. In his words, “the higher the predictability the lower the connectivity.”
- 1990He and Lisa started Fellowship Church
- 24,000Weekly attenders by 2018
- 25-30Hours a week on one weekend message
What makes his style unique
“Fellowship’s flavor is pure, unmitigated Bible 101 packaged in a 21st-century way.”
