— Why he’s one of the greats
Answer a church fight with examples, Christ’s blood, love, then one clear ask.
The first generation after the apostles. Clement led the church in Rome in the 90s, and Irenaeus says he had known the apostles personally. He left no sermons. What survives is 1 Clement, a long pastoral letter from the church in Rome to the church in Corinth (c. 96), written to be read aloud in worship, and it reads like a spoken exhortation from start to finish. His secret: he answers a church fight with a slow, patient sermon instead of a quick ruling. He names the sickness (jealousy) early, then marches the hearers through Scripture’s people one by one, from Cain to Rahab to David, until the lesson is impossible to miss. Every few minutes he turns from “they” to “let us,” so the hearers are never lectured from above. He keeps pulling their eyes to Christ’s blood and to God’s ordered creation, and he saves his one hard request for the last third, right after a hymn to love.
- 65chapters in his letter to Corinth
- 10doxologies in that one letter
- 3rdbishop of Rome after Peter, per Irenaeus
