— Why he’s one of the greats

Tension first, text later, and one sticky line people take home.

Stanley founded North Point Community Church in Atlanta in 1995. His book Communicating for a Change (2006, with Lane Jones) is probably the most-copied sermon method in American churches today. His secret: tension first, text later. He spends the first half of the message on his own story and on a problem everyone shares. Then he gives skeptics permission to opt out, opens the Bible around the halfway mark, and draws one sticky line out of the text and repeats it.
