Pastor, “I’m not qualified to do this”? Good news: none of us are.

Two pastors are asked to do the same funeral. A grieving mother sits in the front row. The first pastor spends the whole week thinking, “I’m not qualified to do this. Who am I to stand in front of her?” The second one thinks, “I’m not qualified either. But I know what’s mine to do, and I know what’s God’s.” Same funeral. Different belief. Different future. If “I’m not qualified to do this” follows you around, here’s the good news hidden inside it, and how to walk free.

The old story: “I’m not qualified to do this”

It’s a deep one, isn’t it? That impostor feeling. I can remember all my firsts: first funeral, first wedding, first time leading someone to Christ, first counseling meeting, first time leading a small staff, first time leading a large staff. In those early days, I definitely felt unqualified.

It shows up at the graveside. It shows up with the grieving mother. It shows up when the church grows beyond anything you’ve led before. And it shows up when you look inward and see a flawed human being. For some pastors, it never shakes off.

What it costs

When you put God-sized expectations on yourself, it makes you feel deeply insecure, unqualified, and like a failure. You carry weight you were never meant to carry.

And it keeps your eyes on you. “I’m not qualified. I’m not good enough.” Why are we even looking at ourselves? The weird thing about insecurity is that it’s hyper-focused on self. Some people try to fix it with “fake it till you make it,” but that still keeps your eyes on yourself.

You actually preach your best sermons when you’re not concerned with how you sound or how you look, but with helping people. That’s when you break through and people walk out asking, “Was he talking to me?” Navel-gazing robs them of that.

Breaking the old story

Here’s where I want to start: concede the premise. The good news is that we are not qualified. Only Jesus was. He’s the spotless lamb. Ministry is a grace. God graces us with a calling to minister to other people, the same way He graced us with salvation.

You don’t forgive sins. You don’t change hearts. So whenever you put yourself in the place of God, of course you’ll feel unqualified. It’s okay to feel that. You were never supposed to sit in that seat.

Look at Peter. I don’t think Peter was qualified to walk on water. He was walking because he obeyed Jesus (Matthew 14:28–29). All he had to do was step out and obey.

That’s the shift. Your activity will define your qualifications far more than what’s on paper. Knowing isn’t doing. The more you do, the more you become.

And underneath a weak identity is usually a weak conviction about who God is and who He’s called you to be. So ask: what is true? What is real? This is my target, my actions, what’s in my hand. And this is who God is.

The new belief: obedience, not qualification

Your help comes from the Lord (Psalm 121:2). It’s not all on your shoulders. It feels like it is, but when you feel the weight of ministry pressing down, put it back where it belongs: “God, these are Your people. They need Your comfort. Teach Your people. Help me do what I can do, and You do what only You can do.”

On my list, the answer is obedience. On God’s list, the answer is trust: faith that He will do it for you and for the people you’re serving.

What to do this week

  1. Write two lists. What I’m responsible for, and what only God is responsible for. Seeing it on paper helps. Of course you’re not qualified for the second list. That’s a God thing.
  2. Work your list. Prepare. Study. Get wisdom. Obey, obey, obey.
  3. Give back what’s His. When you notice God-sized pressure from His list, stop and hand it back to Him in prayer.

This is Lesson 13 of The High Capacity Pastor, my free course in pastoral formation: forty stories pastors tell themselves, and the beliefs that change the way you lead, live, and last.

Get out of the cycle of looking at your navel and look to God: “You are good. You are worthy to be praised. I will obey You to the day I die, and I know You can do what I can’t.” You were never qualified. You were called. Same situation. Different belief. Different future.
