Pastor, “I can handle what destroys other leaders” is a lie. Get help today.
Two pastors are carrying the same secret. The first one tells himself, “I know this destroys other people, but I can handle it. Nobody needs to know. I can fix this on my own.” The second one picks up the phone today and tells someone safe the truth. Same secret. Different belief. One of them is about to fall privately and start healing. The other is going to fall publicly, and further. If you’ve ever told yourself “I can handle what destroys other leaders,” this is the most important article in this series to read slowly.
The old story: “I can handle what destroys other leaders”
This is where the chain ends. First I thought I was special. Then I thought I deserved it. Then I made small compromises. And now I’ve got a big secret, and I’m in big trouble.
But the story keeps talking: “Just because I’m in trouble doesn’t mean I can’t get out of it myself. I don’t need to confess. I don’t need to sabotage my future. I can control this.” That’s full hubris. And at the end of that road it sounds like: I can lie more. I can build a web of lies. I can protect myself.
It feels true because no one has found out yet. You start to think the silence means grace is on you. Your work may even be going great. But your soul is being destroyed.
What it costs
Not confessing isn’t neutral. It’s actively sabotaging your future. The longer you hide and keep secrets, the more the sin compounds.
I had a friend who kept his divorce a secret for over a year. He pushed everyone away, convinced he had it handled. But he didn’t have it. None of us do.
Sin is like a tiger you’ve got by the tail. You think you’re holding it. You’re not in control.
Breaking the old story
Think about how we treat doctors. We feel terrible and wait. We feel worse and wait. Then we’re throwing up blood and saying, “I’ll be fine,” and the doctor says, “I wish you’d come sooner. I could have done more.” The warning signs have been here for three lessons. I’m begging you: go to the doctor.
I know the objection. “The doctor has a knife. If I tell the truth, it will cut me off from ministry.” Here’s the honest answer: God cares far more about your soul than about your ministry.
There was a very famous televangelist in the ’70s and ’80s. His denomination had heard rumors and hired a private investigator, who came back with photographs. Before anything went public, the elders invited him into a meeting and gave him the chance to come clean. He denied everything. Then the superintendent slid an envelope across the table, and there were the photos.
Caught, he looked at those older men and said, “If you take me out of ministry, the blood of everyone who doesn’t get saved is on your hands.” The room went quiet. Then the oldest man there stood up and said, “We don’t care about your ministry. We care about your soul.”
That’s the truth. If you’ve fallen, your soul is more important than your ministry. Your relationship with God is more important than your ministry. Ministry can happen another day. Today is about your soul.
The new belief: Wisdom respects boundaries before I think I need them
The wise leader doesn’t wait until he’s sure he needs help. He builds boundaries and invites help early, because he knows he can’t handle what destroys other leaders. Nobody can.
Match the help to the trouble: little trouble, little help; big trouble, big help. And remember that high capacity was never about being the best, the most famous or the most efficient. It’s about being a pastor whose soul is right with God, healed and healing.
The longer you wait to get help, the greater the fall. Falling privately is better than falling publicly. The best day to confess is today. The best day to come into the light is today. The best day to receive grace is today.
What to do this week
- Match the help to the trouble. If it’s little, tell a friend. If it’s big, get big help: a mentor, an overseer, a counselor, a restoration process.
- Confess what you’re hiding to someone safe today. Not next month. Today.
- Choose to fall privately now rather than publicly later. Repent before a holy God, and let wonderful people help you.
This is Lesson 38 of The High Capacity Pastor, my free course in pastoral formation: forty stories pastors tell themselves, and the beliefs that replace them so you can lead, live and last.
If you’re not right with God, nothing’s right. If that’s you, this is your moment. Humble yourself, let God restore you, and let His people walk with you. I believe there’s a future for you, in Jesus’ name.
— Same situation. Different belief. Different future.
