— Why he’s one of the greats
Pull one sticky phrase from the passage and make the room say it until it’s theirs.
Steven Furtick planted Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2006 at age 25 and preaches to the room, the campuses and a large online audience at once. He talks to the chat as often as to the seats. His secret: he takes one passage and pulls a short, sticky phrase out of it (“Same lies, new loops,” “Hand him the plan,” “Move it to the middle”), then makes the whole room say it, tell a neighbor and type it in the comments until it belongs to them. He works the text phrase by phrase or word by word, and flips words into contrast lines: debate vs. display, lifting vs. looking. He calls himself “a preacher at heart. You can call me an expositor.” Most illustrations come from his wife, Holly, and their kids, often acted out with volunteers on stage.
- 2006He planted Elevation with seven families
- 20Campuses in a 2025 church census
- 17,061Weekly attendees in that census
What makes his style unique
“He’s incredible, he’s inquisitive, he’s intellectual, he’s articulate, he’s creative, he’s anointed, he’s amazing.”
