The livestream era of ancient Eastern Christianity. Mar Mari Emmanuel was born Robert Shlimon in Habbaniyah, Iraq, in 1970, and his family settled in Sydney in 1985. He was ordained a priest in 2009 and consecrated a bishop in 2011, and since 2015 he has led his church in Wakeley, Sydney, an Assyrian congregation in the Eastern Syriac tradition, where he preaches in both Assyrian and English. His secret: he takes an ancient, liturgical faith and talks about it like a father at the kitchen table. He breaks a text into a count (“these nine are really three,” “you need to be a lion and you need to be a lamb at the same time”) and then makes every piece concrete with one homely picture: a magnet, a staff and a rod laid crosswise, a baby in a nappy, salt dissolving in the pot. He gives Jesus, Martha and the reader lines to say, he turns hard to “you” early, and he keeps coming back to the cross. He runs long and jokes about it, and the room stays.
