— Why he’s one of the greats
Plain, short, persuasive gospel sermons built for the room and the camera.
Falwell started Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1956 and put his Sunday services on radio within weeks and on television within months. The Old-Time Gospel Hour carried those Thomas Road services to a national audience for five decades. His secret: he preached plain, short, persuasive gospel sermons that he built for both the room and the camera. By his own account he was “primarily a topical preacher”: he started from the week’s “burning issue,” worked to make the first paragraph grab attention and the ending stick, and kept the sermon to about 30 minutes. Each sermon ended in a call to act. That meant receiving Christ, setting a goal only God could meet, or simply “Don’t quit.”

What makes his style unique
“He remained always a pastor, a faithful preacher of God’s Word.”
