— Why he’s one of the greats
Greet with peace, praise God, call for a turn, press forgiveness, and keep it short.
The street-preaching revival of the early 1200s. Francis left a merchant’s life in Assisi around 1206, gathered a band of brothers, and took preaching out of the cathedral and into piazzas, fields and village squares. No sermon text of his survives; what we have are his Admonitions, his letters, the Rule’s model exhortation, the Canticle of Brother Sun and the accounts of people who heard him. His secret: he preached short, plain and with his whole life behind it. He opened with praise or a greeting of peace, called people to turn to God, pressed forgiveness, set the blessed beside the lost, and stopped. He made the truth visible: a manger with a live ox at Greccio, a flock of birds told to praise their Maker. Thomas of Celano says he spoke “with simple words but largeness of heart,” and that he preached to a huge crowd as if to one person.

- 28Admonitions to his friars that survive
- 1228Canonized less than two years after death
What makes his style unique
“This unlettered man’s sermon became the source of not a little amazement for the many educated people who were present”
