— Why he’s one of the greats
Talk across the counter: one verse, one Bible character, a pile of plain stories.
Dwight L. Moody was a Chicago shoe salesman with about a fifth-grade education who became the best-known evangelist of the 19th century. With song leader Ira Sankey, he filled the largest halls in Britain and America and built the template of united city campaigns, a gospel soloist and the inquiry room. His secret: he preached the Bible like a man talking across a counter. He took one verse, let a Bible character carry it (Adam hiding, Zacchaeus in the tree, Daniel in Babylon), and then piled up short, homely stories about mothers, sons, prisoners and soldiers until the point felt obvious. His theology fit on a card: ruined by the Fall, redeemed by the blood, regenerated by the Spirit. Anyone stirred went to a quiet inquiry room for a one-on-one talk over an open Bible.
